The South Carolina Catholic Conference reported on August 30:
"The South Carolina Supreme Court rejected Planned Parenthood’s petition to reconsider its 4-1 decision upholding the 2023 Fetal Heartbeat and Protection from Abortion Act issued on Aug. 23.
In a two-sentence statement the justices wrote, 'After careful consideration of the petition for rehearing, the court is unable to discover that any material fact or principle of law has been either overlooked or disregarded. The petition for rehearing is therefore denied.' The order was signed by Justices John Kittredge, John Few, George James, Jr., and Garrison Hill, all of whom upheld the law last week.
State Attorney General Alan Wilson, whose office defended the law, said, 'as we have always argued and maintained, the constitutional right to privacy does not apply to abortion. The right to life is foremost and absolutely must be protected and prioritized. We're pleased with the court's decision to deny a petition to rehear this case. I believe this decision will have a long-lasting positive impact on the future of our state, and I am honored our office was able to fight for the unborn and defend the rule of law.'
We are thankful for the Supreme Court's decision to continue to defend and uphold our God-given right to life!"

Pope's Prayer Intention for September
In his September prayer intention, Pope Francis prays people on the margins of society or in inhumane life conditions never be considered less important and not be overlooked by institutions.

A special collection at our Masses on March 12 and 13 was for the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. Anyone wishing to still make a donation can place it in an upcoming offertory collection (clearly marked as designated for Ukraine assistance), or you can donate through Catholic Relief Services at www.crs.org .
The diocese says we can end the precautions that were taken due to COVID-19, except for the distribution of the wine at Holy Communion. Father Hugo says the end of precautions will apply to those who are vaccinated. Anyone who is not vaccinated is still asked to wear a mask during Mass.
